Great Drives: ex-F1 boss David Richards takes his classic Aston Martin DB6 to Cornwall – Telegraph.co.uk

I have always loved messing about in cars. I would “borrow” my mother’s Ford Zodiac in the middle of the night to race around the lanes of North Wales where I grew up. That fuelled an interest in competitive driving that developed into a lifelong passion for rallying.

I was an OK driver but when you sit in a car with a real professional, it’s a wake-up call. Finnish driver Ari Vatanen was like that. We won the World Rally Championship together in 1981, me as his co-driver. Not long afterwards I decided to quit racing and set up a company preparing rally cars instead.

Prodrive prepared cars for Porsche and BMW before teaming up with Subaru. I thought they only made pick-up trucks but during the Nineties we ruled supreme. Our drivers included Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz and Richard Burns – all brilliant behind the wheel.
