A topless man was led away by police after a car crashed into the front of a house in Sunderland.

The white BMW crashed into two cars before smashing into the front of a bungalow in Forster Street, Roker.

Luckily nobody was injured in the crash, which happened shortly after 6am on Sunday.

Officers from Northumbria Police arrested a man on suspicion of drink-driving and it was captured on camera by shocked neighbours.

He appeared to be wearing pyjama bottoms, with no top or shoes on.

Ian Colquhoun was driving to work when he saw the commotion near the junction with Roker Baths Road.

He said: “I was just driving past on my way to work and I saw all the damage.

“I counted two cars that had been hit as well as the house.”

The 28-year-old, from Roker, said he stopped to see if he could help anyone inside the house.

“Me and another guy just kicked the front door and we went in the house to get the old man out,” said Ian.

“Strangely he hadn’t heard the car crash and didn’t hear me kicking the front door.

“It was severe damage. The full front of his house is going to need to be replaced.”

The BMW appears to have collided head-on with a Renault Clio before knocking the back bumper off a parked car and then smashing into the bungalow’s front window.

Two fire engines from Marley Park and Sunderland were at the scene just after 6.15am.

Paramedics were also sent to the crash site after fears people were trapped inside cars.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We got a call at 6.15am to reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision one of which had crashed into a house.

“There were suggestions that people were trapped in the vehicle so we sent a rapid response, an ambulance, a hazardous area response team and also sent our doctor car.

“There were no injuries.”

It is believed only one person was inside the house at the time of the crash.
